Honestly, I thought I hadn’t done a newsletter for maybe 6 weeks. Not 3 months! Guess that’s another good reason to keep this a FREE to read newsletter. I think I finally sat down to write to you because I’m a bit calmer than I have been. Moving house was easy but living in a house that isn’t my dream home is tough. It’s a constant stream of criticism of every wall, floor, bathroom tile, window and don’t get me started on the shower pressure… It can feel very stressful, especially if you’re already an impatient person. But I think having to go away for London Fashion Week has helped put things into perspective. I appreciate the place I now call my home, even if it isn’t MY vision, yet.
But anyway, before I get into it, I just want to say thank you to everyone who has ever subscribed, and especially those of you who have subscribed in the last couple of months. Usually my newsletter format is a catch up on reading, watching, experiencing, listening. So.
What’s happening
Right now I’m recovering from London Fashion Week while also being on deadline but I think, like, I really think, I’m managing better than I usually do. In next week’s special LFW episode (out Monday 25th) I share that for once, I thought about what I would be consuming while travelling for work. In the past when I covered international fashion weeks for newspapers and magazines I kind of got into this pattern of endless caffeine and sugary snacks - perhaps some backstage carbs - then I’d crash at the hotel with room service or takeaway late at night, only to wake up with stomach ache and a new breakout.
As I knew I would be away for eight days, I decided to enjoy just one coffee each day, and was ecstatic to find there was a brand new coffee shop just five minutes from where I was staying. I’d start each day with an oat milk latte and then make sure I ate some kind of meal before each show or event, something that featured protein and something green, even if that was just a Joe and the Juice Green Gains smoothie, which is a vegan protein smoothie. My first event was the launch of Katie Jane Hughes Hyper Shine High Lite Kit at 9am on the Monday morning and from then on I had something going on every day. If you’ve been following my Instagram Stories you’ll know that one of those events was Vogue World on the Thursday and I’m recording a separate episode about Vogue World because I have a lot of thoughts.
A huge highlight of this week has to be the time I spent with Zanna Roberts Rassi, one of four co-founders of Milk Makeup. Her brand was having an event to celebrate the new Pore Eclipse powder and the (amazing) Odyssey Lip Oil Glosses and she also made time to appear on the BeautyMe Podcast. Zanna not only runs Milk Makeup alongside her husband, she also has two children and she’s an entertainment reporter for NBC. If you want to know how she does all of the above, then check out episode 216 of the podcast, out now.
What I’m watching
There have been a few things.
Top Boy Season 3 on Netflix. Bloody good. Say less.
The Supermodels on Apple TV. Proper review on this coming to the BeautyMe podcast asap but halfway through (four episodes in total) I love it.
Wilderness on Amazon Prime. Actually really quite decent viewing that lends itself to a binge.
The Mandalorian Season 3 on Disney. Good. Obviously - it has a cute little green Jedi Master who can do tricks. Haven’t finished it though so no spoilers please!
Next I’m excited to watch The Other Black Girl on Disney, because the book is a really good read. Couple of minor glitches but otherwise a quality read so I can’t wait to see how it comes to life. Also can’t wait to watch Unknown Beauty, the documentary about makeup artist and brand founder Francois Nars, of Nars. Check out the gorgeous trailer below.
What’s next?
I’m still going through my LFW photo edits so I can’t wait to share more, and I’ve just recorded a segment on Katie Jane Hughes’ amazing first product launch in that special LFW episode I mentioned earlier. There’s a great episode coming with a brilliant Australia-based makeup artist and loads more informative TikToks coming your way. If you’re not familiar with my TikTok I basically break down images, products, beauty moments in history and share info on iconic beauties. Find me here.
Thanks for reading - I’ll see you very soon! Promise.
