#73: Finally starting a new year?
Chatting to Feud: Capote Vs the Swans makeup artist Jackie Risotto, what's new in my life and more
I want to say ‘it’s been a minute’ but it’s been three months since I wrote something new for this newsletter. So let me get you up to speed.
Fashion Week was fun
If you haven’t caught up with my videos on TikTok or Instagram, I went backstage at a few shows for London Fashion Week. Although I was invited to more shows than I attended, many of them were seated oppportunities, and while that is lovely and special, I much prefer going behind the scenes. I will never get bored of watching hair and makeup creatives bring a designer’s imagination to life, from creating ‘celeb-y’ skin to defining the perfect undone updo.
Also, let’s be very real; right now, and for the foreseeable future, expressing ourselves through our hair and makeup is a lot more accessible than buying a designer wardrobe.
Below are some of the images I took backstage…
When it comes to the podcast, I started a new series called The Week in Beauty. As you’d expect it’s a small round-up of hair and beauty headlines, kind of like a tasting menu for anyone who doesn’t have time to catch up with everything.
Below is a link to the latest Week in Beauty episode, which includes me talking about Cécred, again, because I’ve noticed there’s a condescending tone in the air from some beauty pros when they discuss what fans of Beyoncé should and shouldn’t expect from her haircare brand. I don’t think we realise just how niche beauty still is, despite the fact that we spend billions on it. Not everyone has the same information or knowledge so I don’t get the amount of snark.
What I’ve been doing
I’m starting two new photography projects, and one of them hopefully involves YOU.
My Hair Story is an opportunity for us to talk, share and document, through photography and video. Over the next six months I will be offering slots for you, or anyone you think would be interested, to sit with me for a 10-15 minute chat, and talk to me about how you feel about your hair.
And I mean hair in all its forms and textures; hair that is voluminous and hair that has been lost.
At the end of each session - which can take place inside, outdoors, your favourite spot - I will take your portrait in a 5-minute shoot. Shoots will take place in London and the West Midlands and I might be persuaded to travel further if a few of you are interested. If you feel more comfortable with a group setting, let me know and we can discuss! I want this to be our project, something that documents a moment in time.
The other hair project will be unveiled at a later date but for now, I’d love if you could share this with anyone who might be interested. All serious enquiries should be sent to info@charissekenion.com. Please write My Hair Story in the subject line.
This week on the BeautyMe Podcast I’m talking about the new FX show, Feud - Capote vs the Swans. It’s a show I’ve been looking forward to seeing forever - and we still don’t have a UK air date.
In this episode, as well as sharing background on this stylish new show from Ryan Murphy, I’m also sharing an interview with makeup department head Jackie Risotto, below.
One aspect I loved from this chat was Jackie sharing her all-time must-haves for makeup behind the scenes. Amongst several Pat McGrath products Jackie said she could not live without MAC Cosmetics Blot Powder. This is a product I used a long time ago, but it was before we had some really good fixing sprays available. I bought this straight after speaking to Jackie and ever since I’ve used it with the MAC Fix+ Stay Over Spray and my makeup does not budge and there is zero oil popping up on my t-zone. Love it!
